Call for Participation in FM Handover View Aquarium Proposal

The buildingSMART alliance North America, in collaboration with the buildingSMART alliances UK & Ireland, German-speaking and Nordic, has launched a Call for Participation to a buildingSMART Aquarium for "Preparing and Supporting Information Flow between Design/ Construction and Facilities Management Applications up to Certification". This call is addressed to:

  • Clients, building owners and operators, facility managers, contractors and designers who have an interest in the development and use of facilities management information;
  • Software companies that develop facilities management applications for the AECOO industry;
  • Software companies with applications that provide information to be used by facilities management applications.

Parties that are interested in participating in the "FM Hanover View Aquarium', should send their application to:

  • Thomas Liebich, buildingSMART International MSG leader
  • Bill East, buildingSMART Alliance North America project coordinator

Summary

It is well established that the biggest costs attach to the operation of a built facility, not the design and construction, and that the biggest rewards from improved information will come at that stage.

The proposal combines two main threads:

  • Development and support by software of a basic (BIM design stage information) FM Handover view that can be taken forward to buildingSMART stage 1 certification.
  • Development of material that will enable a 'Challenge' demonstration of software capability for basic (BIM design stage information) and an extended (BIM construction stage information) FM Handover

With regard to the certification, buildingSMART International has been contacted with regard to making the necessary arrangements for the stage 1 certification workshop to occur in conjunction with the AEC/ST event in Washington in December 2009.

The scope of the view definitions for certification includes:

  1. Basis FM Handover: Main scope are spaces and architectural/HVAC/mechanical/electrical components, including the assigment of the components to spaces and technical systems and the assignement of spaces to zones. It also comprises the placement of components within the building and optionally the reduced geometryof components and spaces. The Basic FM Handover is based on the IFC Coordination View.
  2. Extended FM Handover: Extending the basic FM view with warranty, spares holding, risk assessment, condition and links to document information that may be associated to components and spaces.
