For companies that want to take advantage of better collaboration, buildingSMART International has created a process – the buildingSMART Aquarium – to quickly identify practical solutions.
A buildingSMART Aquarium is a problem solving process to explore business opportunities through better digital collaboration. During an Aquarium, problem owners, software vendors and buildingSMART experts are invited around the table to improve on existing software or to create new software solutions using the open buildingSMART standards. In 3 to 6 months, a solution is ready for implementation by the users.
buildingSMART uses expertise from all over the world to facilitate the Aquarium process and to support the implementation of the solution.
| The benefits of a buildingSMART Aquarium: · Obtain high Return on Investment; · Access truly global solutions and expertise; · Make better decisions earlier; · Enhance coordination between disciplines; · Reduce change orders and mistakes · significantly; · Avoid “hand-checking” of data; · Enable digital collaboration. |
The outputs: · Description of business opportunities; · Problem definition; · Process map; · Exchange requirements; · Proposed software solution. |
A buildingSMART Aquarium follows a three step approach: |
1) Problem definition
An Aquarium starts by formulating the problem and scoping it down to the point where the real high-value interoperability issue lies. A clear understanding of pain points and business opportunities is key to developing a successful solution.

2) Solution development
Based on the problem definition, relevant software developers are identified and selected. A solution is defined and improved by the team in a series of Charrettes2. The lessons learnt from the collaboration directly feed back into the buildingSMART standard work.
3) Implementation
The key to realising substantial business benefits is that problem owners plan the implementation of the solution developed through the buildingSMART Aquarium process.
| “Open” is a key word in the Aquarium. The process, its documentation and results are open and observers are encouraged and welcome. | |
