Special Studies, Reports and Presentations
- NIST report "Cost Analysis of Inadequate Interoperability in the U.S. Capital Facilities Industry" suggests that the cost is US$15.8 bn per year and 2 thirds of it is borne by the building owners.
- Finland's Vera Project Reports are all collected here. Three special mentions are:
- Towards a competitive cluster - An evaluation of real estate and construction technology programmes (2003), Petri Uusikylä, Ville Valovirta, Risto Karinen, Enno Abel, Thomas Froese. The evaluation report shows the evolution of the technology programme scheme. The earlier programmes were quite small and rather fragmented. Their focuswas on the specific fields of technology and industries. The later programmes have a more coordinated and cluster-oriented approach. The results show that the chosen path has been appropriate; for example, the interaction between different actors has increased.
- PM4D Final Report (2002), Martin Fischer & Calvin Kam, CIFE Technical Report 143. The report presents the findings from the design and construction of the Helsinki University of Technology Auditorium Hall 600 (HUT-600) in Finland. Running simultaneously with the design and construction of the HUT-600 project, an international research partnership extensively applied the product modeling approach, tested the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) interoperability standards, and employed an array of design, visualization, simulation, and analysis tools on the 17-month, USD $5-million capital project.
- Final Programme Evaluation Report: Vera - Information Networking in the Construction Process (2002), Thomas Froese, Ph.D., University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada.
- Building Smart International Conference, Oslo, Norway [31 May - 1 June 2005]

CORENET (COnstruction and Real Estate NETwork)
CORENET is driven by the Singaporean Building and Construction Authority in collaboration with other public and private organisations. It is a major IT initiative undertaken by the Singapore Ministry of National Development to re-engineer the business processes of the construction industry to integrate the four major processes of a building project life cycle, supported by key infrastructures:
- Collaorative Design Systems
- Procurement Systems
- Construction Systems
- Facility Management Systems
Currently, the effort is focused at developing a set of infrastructure and industry projects in order to :
- Provide Information Services to allow businesses to speed up business planning and decision making processes;
- Provide Government to Business infrastructure to facilitate electronic building plans submission ( http://www.corenet.gov.sg/integrated_submission/esub/esub.html), checking and approval processes (http://www.corenet.gov.sg/integrated_submission/iss/integrated_plan.html;)
- Provide a set of standards to improve business communications (http://www.itsc.org.sg/tc/5th_term_compo/citc.html;)
- Provide a series of promotions and training to create awareness and encourage adoption (https://www.bca.gov.sg/citi/.)
IFC-mBomb
Launched in September 2002, the project has brought together representatives of the construction and IT industries in a programme to develop an information process framework (the 'scenario'), test cases and complex software interfaces. The project aims at devising a method that will allow a seamless flow of information to pass from design and construction to operation and maintenance - and then decommissioning and demolition if need be.
The project ended in 2004, and its website is now a valuable source of information for IFC related projects.
Vendor ITM User (VIU) Presentations
Vendor ITM User (VIU) workshops are organised by the buildingSMART's International Technical Management Committee. The purpose is to bring the software vendors and users together in a problem solving working environment. Currently it is not a marketing event for the vendor; it is about getting something for the ITM and for the users. In the future, multiple tracks may be considered to include commercialisation as a theme.
